When: August 22-23rd, 2009
Where: San Francisco Bay Area, hosted by the Richmond Yacht Club
Who: BeatSarcoma, a nonprofit founded by a Sarcoma survivor and local sailor and the Richmond Yacht Club is excited to bring to you these sponsorship opportunities for the Sarcoma Cup Regatta, a charity regatta in support of sarcoma research.
Why:
Well, two reasons:
1. Sponsor a race designed for the most active fleets in the Bay Area
- Visibility in sailing circles, press and local area: this is a powerful human story of an entire sailing community getting together to support one of its members
- In kind donations will encourage product trials and generate recommendations: highly qualified buyers will be using the product and encouraging others to buy
- Giving back to the community, associated PR and employee satisfaction
- Promoting sailing/boating/yacht racing as a sports, a generous and charitable community and a recreational activity.
2. Associate with a world class club and a world class regatta:
- 2-day regatta opened to all classes and boats (august date), without any conflict with major fleets’ calendar
- The first day will be dedicated to round-the-buoy racing, and the second day will be a format that is not readily available to sailors in SF Bay
- People will be given the option to register for either 1 or 2 day
- We are expecting 100 boats at this time
Packages come in various shapes and sizes, as illustrated below:
Additional items can be added if you would like to partner with us, including
- stickers on all racing sailboats
- a branded spinnaker, to be used by Elise during the race and raffled or auctioned off afterwards.
- top award for cruising division named after your company, drug, or program.
Donations are ideally in cash or checks made out to BeatSarcoma. We can also discuss in kind donations or vouchers for the raffle or charity auction if you are interested.
How we will publicize:
- Miles Levin, a teenager who succumbed to the disease, received national attention – and appeared on Anderson Cooper’s show. We will appeal to these same media as this constitutes a nice story arc – we are now holding the flag and continuing the fight.

Make a real impact in sarcoma cancer research
Efforts to cure a disease that represents 20% of childhood cancers remain poorly funded, with under $100K in annual funding (NCI). Sarcomas are aggressive cancers that arise in the connective tissues. They represent only about 1% of all adult cancers and 15-20% of childhood cancers. And among adults, they primarily affect young adults, so the toll on lost lives is high…The amount of funding allocated to sarcoma research - less than 1% of the money available for cancer research - for hundreds of thousands of patients – and so many children. With money comes greater research focus which is what we need most to bring closer the time when scientists find a cure.
Supporting sarcoma research will have a huge impact
- Important funding needs: Sarcomas are hard to diagnose, hard to detect and hard to treat. Biopsy is the only diagnostic tool and surgery often the only curative treatment. Many sarcomas resist current cancer treatments.
- High return on funds: Sarcoma research is still at the beginning of the learning curve. The incremental value of every dollar is high. Donors and sponsors can make a noticeable impact
- Far-reaching benefits: BeatSarcoma favors fundamental translational and early clinical research as opposed to late clinical trials. The funding needs there are greater and the benefits far-reaching.
- No “tax” levied on donations: Currently, 100% of funds raised support sarcoma research.
- Complete Transparency: BeatSarcoma publishes all relevant financial and medical information.
- Powerful Focus: In order to reach efficiencies of scale and a greater impact, BeatSarcoma is focused on sarcoma-related issues.
- Global coverage: Sarcoma recognizes no border and BeatSarcoma works across all of them
Why us?
- BeatSarcoma works with leading institutions to identify high impact projects and will fund the most promising and far-reaching programs, regardless of where it is hosted.
- BeatSarcoma is organized around the idea of racing and sailing.
- BeatSarcoma’s founder is an active local sailor
